The organization
Founded in 2005, RefugePoint is a fast-growing, internationally recognized nonprofit with offices in Cambridge, USA and Nairobi, Kenya. Our mission is to provide lasting solutions for the world’s most vulnerable refugees. We address the critical and unmet needs of those who fall through the cracks of humanitarian assistance and have no other options for survival, with a focus on women, children, and urban refugees.

Main Purpose of the Position
With supervision and guidance from the US-based headquarters’ office, the Kenya Country Director serves as RefugePoint’s primary representative to our partners and collaborators in Kenya and bears overall responsibility for the management and implementation of all functions of the Kenya office. The position works closely with top-level management in determining the organization’s strategic direction, priorities and approaches.

Key Functions

Internal Management, Leadership

  • Provide effective overall management for the organization’s Kenya-based programs.
  • Maintain close coordination and communication with all of the organization’s Kenya-based staff, with particular attention to achieving outcomes, professional development and staff morale.
  • Ensure the overall high quality and ethical standards of the organization’s Urban Refugee Protection Program.
  • Ensure resources are in place and used effectively to carry out the organization’s strategy and planned activities.
  • Ensure that accurate and timely financial and programmatic reports are provided as needed to funders and headquarters.

Strategic Planning, External Representation

  • Collaborate with headquarters to have the maximum impact on policies and programs affecting refugees and asylum seekers globally.
  • Assist in providing strategic leadership for the organization and in setting both long and short-range programmatic goals.
  • Continually explore opportunities for the organization to expand and strengthen its impact.
  • Serve as the primary representative and designee for the organization in Kenya with external partners, vendors, legal counsel, local authorities, financial institutions, etc.
  • Develop and maintain strong and influential relationships with a wide array of operational partners, including governmental, intergovernmental, nongovernmental organizations and other key stakeholders.
  • Represent the organization as requested at international meetings and conferences.

Finance and Administration

  • Ensure that the organization’s policies and practices in its Nairobi Urban programs meet the statutory requirements and accounting standards connected with its non-profit registration statuses.
  • Ensure fiscal responsibility of Kenya operations, practicing good stewardship, remaining within budget, protecting assets, optimizing resources, overseeing the annual audit process.
  • Help safeguard the organization’s long-term stability, solvency, reputation, and progress on mission.
  • Maintain steady and close communication with the organization’s headquarters to ensure excellent coordination and compliance with all agency requirements.

Program Oversight, Implementation

  • Ensure staff have effective policies, procedures, and systems in place to effectively implement the organization’s strategy and planned activities
  • Supervise and support all programs and units in Nairobi.
  • Ensure the overall high quality and ethical standards of the organization’s Nairobi programs.
  • Collaborate with headquarters on communications, public relations, fundraising, partnership building, monitoring and evaluation, and interactions with the Board of Directors.

Qualifications

  • University Degree in a relevant field required, advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of related experience, at least 5 of which in a senior management-level position
  • Kenyan citizens strongly encouraged to apply
  • Demonstrated expertise speaking in public and serving in representational roles
  • Minimum five years experience working with refugees in urban or camp settings
  • Experience working closely with an overseas headquarters office preferred
  • Experience working within the refugee resettlement field preferred
  • Non-profit finance and administration experience essential.
  • Exceptional people skills, particularly in cross-cultural communication.
  • Experience in human resource development, performance management, supervising individuals and teams and building healthy work environments
  • Analytical, detail-oriented, of the highest integrity, and possessing sound judgment.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office products and generally competent with technology
  • Willingness to travel as necessary
  • Strong commitment to RefugePoint’s mission.
