The Oxfam Confederation is made up of 17 Oxfam affiliates (including Oxfam GB) working across 92 countries. In 2009, all Oxfam affiliates decided to work more closely together as a global movement for change. Oxfam GB has been working in South Sudan since 1983. We aim to overcome poverty and inequality through the most effective, appropriate and enduring solutions. Oxfam’s institutional mandate is therefore threefold; development work, emergency humanitarian relief work & policy advocacy work. Oxfam South Sudan is currently implementing humanitarian response programs and Development Programmes in different parts of the country. To strengthen the programme, Oxfam is looking for a highly motivated individual to work as Protection Coordinator to be based in Akobo, Jonglei State, South Sudan.
The Role
The Protection Coordinator will provide support for the delivery of safe programming in humanitarian programmes and integrate basic protection activities into humanitarian responses as appropriate. You will lead community based protection activities, including mobilizing, capacity building, and programme development in the field programme. You will provide advice, support and recommendations to program managers and staff to support delivery of safe programming and address protection issues at each stage of the program management cycle; including through input into Strategic Operational Plans, mapping of services/assistance, strategy development, humanitarian assessment tools, program design and implementation, funding proposals, design and application of MEAL frameworks and tools. . You will lead in capacity building on protection issues for Oxfam staff and partners in the field, linking with national, regional and humanitarian capacity-building initiatives. In addition you will represent Oxfam externally: develop alliances with agencies working in the field on protection with a view to enhancing coordination, and adopting complementary approaches including active participation in relevant protection coordination and planning mechanisms.
The Person
To be successful in this role you will have a degree qualification in law, international relations, political science or any other related field with strong conceptual and practical understanding of protection issues and approaches in humanitarian contexts, including the constraints, sensitivities and risks associated with such work. You will have proven involvement in humanitarian response work, preferably in a humanitarian or protection role in conflict or insecure environments. proven work experience of supporting large-scale emergency responses in a complex humanitarian environment with an international or multinational organization. You will have a well developed interpersonal and team skills and proven ability to be flexible in demanding situations. You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills coupled with high-level of interpersonal, influencing, negotiation and representational capabilities.
