South Sudan: Psychosocial Coordinator

Organisational Context

Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international Catholic organization, with a mission to accompany, serve and defend the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people. JRS has a priority to work wherever the needs of displaced people are urgent and unattended by others, and offers a human service to refugees and the communities through a wide range of rehabilitation and relief activities, many of which centre around formal and informal education needs.

JRS-Eastern Africa Region has 9 operational projects which are involved in activities such as education (formal and non-formal), psychosocial, protection, livelihood and pastoral care. These projects are coordinated by country offices in Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan, as well as the Regional Office based in Nairobi which provide the overall supervisory and coordination role.

Role

The Psychosocial Coordinator is the primary responsible for overall leadership, management and administration of the psychosocial programme in JRS Maban project, which includes identification of vulnerable population, support groups, awareness campaigns, individual peer support by refugee peer counsellors and sports/recreational activities for youth among others.

Key Responsibilities

• Take responsibility of overall leadership, management and administration of the psychosocial programme.

• Recruit and supervise community volunteers engaged in the psychosocial project.

• Develop and supervise culturally- and age-appropriate psychosocial community-based interventions including support groups, awareness campaigns, individual peer support by refugee peer counselors and sports/recreational activities for youth.

• Develop tools for identification and categorization of extremely vulnerable and regular home visits.

• Develop training modules and methodologies for community members, refugee peer counsellors and other stakeholders as appropriate.

• Deliver trainings to community members, refugee peer counsellors and other stakeholders with appropriate use of participatory methods of adult education.

• Provide appropriate professional supervision to programme assistants and refugee peer counsellors engaged in the psychosocial programme.

• Develop and implement record keeping mechanisms for all beneficiaries and activities carried out.

• Develop and maintain referral mechanisms and collaboration with all stakeholders in the area of psychosocial well-being.

• Ensure that confidentiality of beneficiaries is actively protected at all times.

• Ensure that all refugee peer counsellors know and comply with PSEA and child protection standards.

• Maintain project documentation and regularly collect Monitoring and Evaluation data.

• Prepare programme proposals, budgets and reports as requested.

• Maintain communication with other JRS team members, partner agencies, community leaders and other relevant stakeholders and participate consistently in relevant coordinating forums.

Qualifications and Experience:

Essentials:

• Graduate degree or equivalent in Social Work, Psychology or related field.

• Minimum of 2 years of work experience in delivery of social services and/or counselling.

• Experience with/knowledge of community-based delivery of psychosocial services.

• Experience of cross-cultural delivery of social services, particularly in refugee/IPD settings.

• Experience with/interest in design and delivery of trainings in cross-cultural settings with low literacy levels.

• Demonstrated experience and commitment to working with marginalized communities.

• Strong analytical, strategic thinking and planning skills.

• Strong monitoring and evaluation skills/experience.

• Good knowledge of MS word, Excel/Office.

• Excellent oral and written English.

• Ability to build effective partnership and collaborate with other team members.

• Patience, perseverance and ability to work in stressful environment and a simple lifestyle.

• Proactive and self-motivated.

Desirable

• Oral Arabic language.

• Experience with JRS in counselling, community mobilization or related field.

• Knowledge of project cycle management.

• Understanding of the role of faith-based institutions in humanitarian work and ensuring its mission and values are envisioned in all the work.

Terms and Conditions

Contract is for one year, renewable with an initial probationary period of four months.

JRS remuneration policy is in keeping with the JRS ethos to offer effective and professional services and at the same time express solidarity with the people served. This position offers a localised salary. Details will be discussed with short-listed candidates.
