Job Description and required qualifications
(Important Note- Position open to Ugandan nationals only)
Under the supervision of the Protection Program Manager, the incumbent will perform the following functions:
Protecting refugees or other persons of concern to SGBP Program and:
- In the case of partner-referred asylum seekers, such interviews will assist in the determination of whether further HIAS assistance is appropriate.
- Determining for all cases seen by the Psychosocial Program the most appropriate protection solutions for referred refugee clients.
- Assist in research, development of training curricula and conduct presentations on a need to basis in line with the psychosocial program goals and objectives;
- Represent the agency in various forum with a focus on highlighting the plight of Sexual and Gender based Violence clients.
- Assist in identification and referral of cases for psychosocial assessments, medical assistance and other services and monitoring of the same.
- Ensuring that the Psychosocial Program maintains correct data on its protection, advocacy and capacity building activities, and its caseloads.
- Preparing Monthly, Annual Reports and Donor reports on Sexual and Gender based Violence activities and caseloads for submission to the Protection program manager.
- Working closely with other departments and staff members.
- Follow up of client cases in Police and court.
- Performing other duties as required.
Education: A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Law from a recognized university, Post Graduate Diploma from Law Development Centre. Master’s degree a plus
Skills and competencies
- Computer literacy a must with strong knowledge of ACCESS, EXCEL AND WORD;
- Ideal candidate should have a keen awareness and a good knowledge of protection issues and the complexities of working on these issues with a refugee population;
- Strong analytical and report writing skills;
- Must have at a least 3 years’ experience in providing legal assistance in multi-cultural environment. Experience with refugees plus;
- Experience working with refugees, with good knowledge of human rights and protection;
- Training skills and experience
- At least one year of training experience;
- Good team player with excellent cross-cultural international skills, proactive and able to work under minimal supervision while exercising diplomacy, flexibility and assertiveness;
- Ability to confront and discuss sensitive issues with respect and confidentiality.
Experience: No less than three years job experience in legal assistance, preferably in the NGO sector. Knowledge of refugee protection and assistance a plus.
Language: Proficiency in English and Swahili. Working knowledge of French and other languages as an added advantage.
