PROGRAM/DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

Mercy Corps exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by building secure, productive and just communities. Mercy Corps is in the process of acquiring an existing capacity building services delivery initiative that provides workshops, coaching services, and an on-going learning experiences through an active learning community/network. The transition process will create the opportunity for Mercy Corps to conduct the necessary research, cultivate funding and stakeholder relationships, and develop strategies and plans for success in building a quality offering to the world.

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

The Capacity Building Coordinator will lead an integration and expansion planning process for capacity building support services to development practioners. He/She works closely with a core team of stakeholders:

  • Mercy Corps Uganda Country Director, where the initiative will be housed, to expand in the region;
  • The Youth, Gender and Girls team who will support in curriculum review, provide training support, technical support to the Community,, and lead on global fundraising;
  • The Community Manager and other Uganda-based team member(s) to deliver capacity building service.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Refine and execute an overall eight month workplan, making adjustments and pivots as necessary and engaging and informing stakeholders of changes.
  • Ensure that revenue/funding is secured through new funding partners or paying clients to support core project management functions and services.
  • Research 5-6 different business models for offering experiential trainings, tailored coaching and an engaged and active community.
  • Work closely with key stakeholders and advisory group to ensure field-based practitioners would use/want/need/pay/support the model.
  • Expand existing community.
  • Support Community Manager and Uganda based staff to develop and implement a Community expansion plan.
  • In coordination with CD, meet with prospective donors/ clients to pitch initiative offerings in Uganda and/or region.
  • Prepare business development materials as needed and ensure follow-up to conversations.
  • Lead in charting out and executing on plan leading up to October 2015 USAID-hosted Child and Youth forum in Uganda.
  • Ensure that MC participates in the youth forum with booth/kiosk and offer capacity building workshop(s) to participants shortly after the workshop concludes.
  • Work with key stakeholders and advisory group to finalize funding and implementation model including implementation and financial plans, and have detailed information such as pricing for fee for service component, community entry guidelines and rules, business plan for community growth and expansion into other regional hubs (three by year three).
  • In close coordination with CD and Y2G Director, chart out and deliver on plan to present at GLG in January 2015.
  • Manage transition budget and any additional resources secured.

Organizational Learning: As part of our commitment to organizational learning and in support of our understanding that learning organizations are more effective, efficient and relevant to the communities they serve - we expect all team members to commit 5% of their time to learning activities that benefit Mercy Corps as well as themselves.

Accountability to Beneficiaries: Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts towards accountability, specifically to our beneficiaries and to international standards guiding international relief and development work, while actively engaging beneficiary communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

REPORTS DIRECTY TO: Country Director, Uganda

WORKS DIRECTLY WITH: Community Manager (secondee through October 2015), Y2G Team, Girl specialists from MC and community.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • At least five years of overseas experience in the area of youth development.
  • Strong youth education and/or youth curriculum and capacity building experience.
  • Master's degree and/or 5 years or more experience in related field.
  • Strong organizational, writing and verbal skills.
  • Self-starter and able to work independently to coordinate an initiative.
  • Experience in building strong and positive working relationships with other teams, departments and at all levels of an organization (both internal to Mercy Corps as well as among a broad set of organizations).
  • Experience effectively managing staff
  • Experience in developing and managing budgets
  • Skills in leading matrixed teams for successful results, including across time zones.
  • Experience in preparing and giving presentations in varying formats (traditional and creative).
  • Knowledge of French, Spanish and/or Arabic an advantage

LIVING /ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

The position is based in Kampala, Uganda, with expected time in Portland and Washington DC area while waiting for work permit. Team members represent the agency both during and outside of work hours when deployed in a field posting or on a visit/TDY to a field posting. Team members are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC's policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
