Overall purpose:
La Benevolencija has been producing and broadcasting Musekeweya (New Dawn), a radio drama on reconciliation in Rwanda since 2004. In these years, the drama has been funded by various donors. In an attempt to diversify the funding for Musekeweya and focus on its long term, sustainability, La Benevolencija is commissioning this financial sustainability study. It is anticipated that the results of the study will provide a clear idea of available funding opportunities in Rwanda, and provide an action plan for a pilot.
Key deliverables:
- Research financial sustainability strategies of long running radio programmes in Africa with a focus on the Great Lakes region.
- Conduct interviews with relevant organisations and create a dossier of comparative examples for La Benevolencija.
- Carry out interviews with key stakeholders in Rwanda including programme staff, donors, radio stations, the commercial sector to determine financial sustainability options for Musekeweya beyond donor funding.
- Devise a strategy for how the radio drama Musekeweya can be transitioned in a phased way from donor funding to other sources of funds in Rwanda and the Great Lakes region.
- Create an action plan for La Benevolencija to implement a new financial strategy for Musekeweya.
Skills and competencies:
- Significant experience of marketing non profit radio programming.
- Ample knowledge of the radio and commercial market in Rwanda.
- Demonstrable knowledge of financial sustainability strategies in radio in Africa, specifically in the Great Lakes.
About La Benevolencija:
Radio La Benevolencija (RLB) is a Dutch non-governmental organization working in Rwanda since 2003. The central mission of the organization is to empower groups and individuals that form the target of hate speech and ensuing acts, and to strengthen the population as a whole to resist incitement to violence. RLB produces a weekly radio drama Musekeweya, which is now in its 12th year of production.
