I: JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Transport Officer, the Tractor and Machinery Operator will primarily be responsible for handling the specialized motorized equipment such as skip loaders, water bowsers and heavy machineries, tractor and any other vehicle as directed by the supervisor. He/she will at all times comply with CARE’s vehicle policies and regulations.
II: RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
R1: Handling of machinery and heavy equipment
1.1 Observe basic equipment checks before starting the day’s work; make sure equipment tools, towing rope/rod bars any other accessories are in place before starting the day’s work.
1.2 Understand all duties assigned by his supervisor concerning transportation and competently operate the assigned equipment.
1.4 Carry out daily general cleanliness of the equipment.
1.5 Occasionally carry out normal driving duties as assigned by supervisor.
R2: Safety of the Equipment/vehicle /passengers/materials.
2.2 Drive CARE vehicle responsibly and with caution.
2.2 Ensure safety of passengers aboard CARE vehicles i.e. all passengers to wear safety belts before start of a journey.
2.3 Ensure vehicle safety tools and equipment are in working condition before start of any journey.
2.4 Carry only authorized passengers as per the CARE policies.
2.5 The driver shall at all times park the vehicle at the designated parking area/secure place with
all doors and windows locked and keys kept safely.
2.6 He/she shall adhere to safety and security Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
R3: Ensure all vehicles legal documentation or condition is met by the organization
3.1 Check validity of equipment/vehicles insurance, road license and police inspection stickers.
3.2 Ensure assigned equipment/vehicle is serviced as stipulated in the periodic servicing schedules.
3.2 Report license expiry dates to your supervisor on time to facilitate renewals.
3.4 Update equipment/vehicles logbook particulars by making right entries.
R4: Reporting of accidents and incidents
4.1 Report accident/incident immediately to the Police and Supervisor; do not accept liability.
4.2 Submit an accident/incident report to the supervisor immediately but not later than 2 days.
III: AUTHORITY:

· Supervision: N/A
· Decision Making: Makes normal decisions within prescribed standards.
IV: CONTACTS/KEY RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: CARE staff,
External: UNCHR, WFP, UNICEF and other implementing partners in Dadaab.
V: WORKING CONDITIONS:
The position shall be based in Dadaab main office or Ifo or Dagahely camps as well as any other extension camps and program sites. This is a none-family working station. Hot weather is prevalent throughout the year with limited basic amenities. Vehicle movement must be under police escort (scheduled convoys) at all times. Strict adherence to security instructions and SOPs is a mandatory requirement. It is a 6 days’ work station.
The incumbent shall reside within CARE compound while executing official duties.
VI: QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCEAND COMPETENCIES
Qualification & Experience:
· Valid driving license for class B, C, E and D, Special Type – Plant Operator and Kenya Secondary Education Certificate.
· 5 years hands-on experience in driving and operating tractors engaged to turntable drawbar trailers.
· Fully conversant with operating a tractor with front loader and backhoe.
· Broad experience in skip loading and operating tipping machineries.
· Ability to multi-task and operate both pneumatic and hydraulic equipments.
· Knowledge on basic mechanical operating systems on tractors. (Diff lock, 4Wd engagement etc).
Certificate: Certificate of good conduct.
Competencies
· Good communication, writing & interpersonal Ability to use Microsoft office packages
