COOPI is part of the Somalia Resilience Programme; an NGO led consortium implementing resilience based initiative in Baidoa District, Bay Region. The objective of this program is to contribute to improved resilience and increased adaptive capacities for communities and households to protect their livelihoods over continuing shocks.

Position - Livestock & Range land development officer (LRDO)
Reporting to Resilience Program Manager
Duration 10 Months (3 months probation period) with possibilities of extension
Location Baidoa district in Bay Region.
Tasks Technical activities:

• Ensure timely procurement and delivery/provision of right quality and quantity of inputs/supplies required by the beneficiaries and ensure these are used appropriately
• Facilitate the establishment of Community-based Animal Health Workers in pastoral & Agro-pastoral target villages
• Promote sustainable livestock practices including good breeding/ breed improvement, improved animal husbandry, livestock marketing (including preservation and processing of animal products/ value addition through whole value chain approach).
• Facilitate establishment of PFS for training livestock farmers on good practices for livestock husbandry and pasture/rangeland management and for adaptation of improved pastoralist practices
• Promote improved/standard livestock technologies to livestock farmers or pastoralists.
• Assess the pastoral dry season rangeland and water resources management status in target areas.
• Promote the use of improved rangeland and water resources management practices (gabion, stone and gully checks - both physical and biological, semi-circular bunds, reseeding, enclosures etc ) to support animal production
• Support/facilitate CFW implementation on pastoral activities (re-greening, bush clearing, check dams, semi-circular bunds etc)
• Identify key sources of conflict and peace in natural resource management and promote effective conflict mitigation practices to bring peace among communities
• Support or strengthen community-level early warning committees to promote risk management.
• Promote value addition and support on marketing and market linkages of animal products
Qualifications • Diploma or University degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine or Rangeland Science with Community Development and participatory skills
• Must be a Somali National with clear knowledge of the region of operation and member of region livestock professional association.
• Strong computer skills and ability to use standard computing packages (word, excel, outlook, power point, internet etc)
• Developed planning, organizational and research / analytical skills;
• Strong team working and interpersonal skills;
• Experience working in fast paced humanitarian programming in Somalia is an advantage;
• Be able to communicate effectively in Somali and English Language.
