Global Health Corps (GHC) is a leadership development organization focused on building the next generation of diverse, disruptive global health leaders. Founded in 2009, we competitively recruit talented professionals (ages 21-30) from a range of sectors and backgrounds and place them in high-impact roles within partner organizations -- including Clinton Health Access Initiative, Partners in Health, Planned Parenthood Global, and Government Ministries in Zambia, Rwanda, and Uganda -- working on the front lines of health equity in Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, the US, and Zambia.

GHC is seeking fellows from a wide range of backgrounds, geographies, and expertise. Through a one-year paid fellowship program, fellows provide the expertise and leadership potential needed to fill capacity gaps in global health.

About Placement Organization

The Ministry of Health is a government institution with a mandate to provide health service delivery. Within the Ministry of Heath, the Directorate of Disease Surveillance Control and Research has a mandate to generate timely information for evidence based health service delivery. The Research Unit coordinates all health research activities in Zambia.

Position Overview

The Senior Research Associate will be based in Lusaka. The main role of the Senior Research Associate will be to provide support to the Research Unit of the Ministry of Health headquarters in Zambia. This includes helping to build the capacity to undertake health research activities and develop effective strategies for communicating research findings. The Research Fellow will report to the Principal Surveillance and Research Officer at the Ministry of Health and help coordinate various research activities, including research monitoring, grant writing, and dissemination activities.

Responsibilities

  • Data Management and Reporting: maintain an accurate and up-to-date database of all health research activities in the country and provide timely reports on the status of each activity
  • Grant Writing: prepare letters of intent for grant application and participate in proposal development
  • Conduct and coordinate research and provide timely reports including:
    • Initiate research by actively exploring research questions
    • Develop manuscripts for potential publication in scientific journals
    • Organize research dissemination activities for the unit/directorate
    • Develop policy briefs and memos for meetings
    • Conduct literature review on topical issues as required
    • Prepare activity reports as required and submit research activity reports to the Head of the Research Unit by December 2016
  • Capacity Building: participate in capacity building activities for health research
  • Additional: participate in other activities as requested by the supervisor

Required Skills and Experience

  • Proficient in data management software like SPSS, STATA, MS Access or NVivo
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience with proposal development and grant writing
  • Experience with capacity building initiatives
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Strong research background, including data analysis and report writing skills
  • Proficient scientific writer
  • Experience in grant management
  • Familiarity with health research ethics
  • Adaptive to the working environment

Fellowship Logistics

During the fellowship year, all fellows are provided with:

  • A living stipend of $650/month
  • Housing and utilities
  • Health insurance
  • A professional development grant of $600
  • An award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year
  • Travel costs covered to and from placement site, training and retreats

*Note: The living stipend and the completion award may be paid out in USD or local currency, as determined by the placement organization.

Living and Working in Zambia: Fellows are provided with housing and utilities during the fellowship year. Housing arrangements vary based on the placement organization and location within the country. Fellows placed at the Ministry of Health will be provided with housing in Lusaka, an urban center and capital of Zambia.
