Organization: Global Health Corps
Country: Uganda
Closing date: 02 Feb 2016

About the Global Health Corps Fellowship:

Global Health Corps (GHC) is a leadership development organization focused on building the next generation of diverse, disruptive global health leaders. Founded in 2009, we competitively recruit talented professionals (ages 21-30) from a range of sectors and backgrounds and place them in high-impact roles within partner organizations -- including Clinton Health Access Initiative, Partners in Health, Planned Parenthood Global, and Government Ministries in Zambia, Rwanda, and Uganda -- working on the front lines of health equity in Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, the US, and Zambia.

GHC is seeking fellows from a wide range of backgrounds, geographies, and expertise. Through a one-year paid fellowship program, fellows provide the expertise and leadership potential needed to fill capacity gaps in global health.

About Placement Organization

The mission of the organization is to curb the further spread of HIV among the less privileged members of the community and enable those already living with HIV and AIDS to live a responsible and dignified life. Reach Out Mbuya (ROM) uses a holistic approach to the care of people living with HIV (PLHIV) that focuses on the physical, social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of the patient. This is done by looking at the needs of the body, mind, family and community in effective patient care. The program focuses on HIV prevention, care and treatment and community and social support, using low cost interventions like a nurse-led medical care approach and utilization of expert clients as the community health workers (CHWs). ROM is currently looking at expanding the scope of services provided and increasing their visibility.

Position Overview

The Communications and Partnership Officer will be based in Kampala. For the past 14 years, ROM has been engaged in effective programming built on best practices, yet the visibility of ROM is still lacking. ROM heavily depends on one donor for funding and this threatens the survival of the program should the donor withdraw funding at any time. An Advocacy Officer is needed at this time to improve the visibility of the organization through print, social and electronic media. Improved visibility will help ROM attract more funding for the organization. The fellow will work with the PR and Communications Officer and her assistant to ensure that the public is appropriately informed of key developments and events in ROM, to promote and protect ROM’s public image, and to coordinate ROM partnerships at all levels while maintaining a positive image of the organization.

Responsibilities

The goal of the job is to implement and evaluate ROM’s advocacy interventions and communicate the key issues to the key stakeholders in line with the ROM advocacy and communications policy. The fellow will help coordinate ROM partnerships at all levels to influence collaborations for attainment of the ROM advocacy agenda, while maintaining a positive image of the organization.

The Officer will be expected to:

  • Scan the social environment to identify issues in society that can affect ROM’s mission and come up with advocacy-related interventions
  • Build strong alliances and networks with public and private partner organizations for concerted advocacy efforts and greater participation in policy dialogue in line with the ROM PR, advocacy, and communications policy
  • Take photographs, record video, document and share experiences arising from advocacy interventions with the supervisor and other key stakeholders in line with the ROM PR, advocacy, and communications policy
  • Develop an operational activity plan and budget for advocacy issues
  • Prepare presentations, speeches, press releases, electronic direct mailers, media and communications
  • Increase the visibility of ROM using social media
  • Build the capacity of ROM staff in advocacy, partnership, and networking
  • Coordinate the development and production of information, education, and communication (IEC) materials for advocacy on HIV care, treatment, and prevention
  • Participate in carrying out advocacy campaigns on issues related to HIV care, treatment and prevention and other emerging priorities
  • Prepare and submit monthly and quarterly performance reports as required
