South Sudan: South Sudan: Resident Journalism Advisor

General Function:

Internews Network is currently seeking experienced radio reporters/producers to train and mentor staff at our partner network of community radio stations across South Sudan. South Sudan is a new country and is in the process of developing an independent media sector.

You will be passing on the skills you currently use to make great radio, with the reward of seeing individuals grow and develop skills as well as communities discover they have a voice and platform for ideas and comment. You could find yourself working with an existing local radio station to improve programing and reporting, or working to train newly recruited community members to report and produce programs

The position is a roving, field based and requires living in the communities where the stations are operating. It involves providing on-going training and mentoring, and building the managerial and journalistic capacity of radio station staff in remote parts of the region.

The successful candidate will need to be resilient, resourceful and self-motivated to work in the extremely challenging environment of South Sudan. She/he will be a radio all-rounder, comfortable with reporting, producing and editing - probably with a background in domestic local or national radio, commercial and/or public service. Experience of living in African conflict/post conflict environments is desirable as the work requires extensive travel to remote parts of South Sudan. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• In conjunction with the program director, assist in the development and implementation of a broadcast training program
• Organize workshops and train community radio reporters and managers with limited experience on a variety of topics, with special emphasis on content, production and radio station editorial management
• Train new recruits with little or no media experience to become radio reporters.
• Assist in development and implementation of community radio station policies, structures, and general operating procedures to ensure smooth and professional running of the stations. Train station editorial management staff in these procedures and ensure adherence to same.
• Travel to community radio station locations in remote regions of South Sudan on a regular basis to provide necessary guidance and oversee daily operations and programming schedules of the radio stations
• Assist in development of station identity/branding
• Assist in all Monitoring & Evaluation aspects of the project, including daily program logs and training reports
• Coordinate with Internews partner organizations and other NGOs to facilitate creative program sharing and collaboration
• Work extensively in the community to increase community participation in creative radio programming
• Provide media literacy training with NGOs, government partners and civil society
• Understanding of and demonstrated commitment to upholding Internews’ Core Values

Qualifications:

• Minimum 2 years radio broadcasting experience.
• Experience in broadcast training and mentoring.
• Fluency in use of digital field recording equipment, basic studio equipment and CoolEdit Pro/Adobe Audition.
• Ability to adjust to shifting political circumstances and create programming accordingly
• Sensitivity to cross-cultural dynamics in the work place and experience supervising staff
• Must be self-reliant, resourceful, good problem-solver, good humored, and flexible.
• Project management skills – to manage and support staff to deal with logistical and HR issues at the radio station.
• Ability to travel within South Sudan. Willingness to spend extended time in the field, with limited facilities, often under harsh conditions.
• Must be computer literate
