South Sudan: Surgical Nurse, Urgent deployment - 2 months

****Requirements****

  • University Degree in Nursing, with further specialisation in Surgery
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken English
  • At least four years of experience in assisting general surgery
  • Registration with relevant professional board/s
  • Strong supervisory, organizational and teaching skills
  • Previous experience in developing countries.

****Purpose****

For the initiation period of the newly constructed and equipped operating theatre at Rumbek State Hospital, the OT nurse is responsible for coordinating surgical nursing activities (including but not limited to emergency obstetric care and treatment of conflict related wounds) within the OT with the international surgical staff, with the aim to establish best possible standards of new surgical procedures for the hospital and to provide national hospital staff with a capacity building program on the surgical treatment and post-operative needs of patients.

****Key responsibilities****

  1. Lead surgical nursing staff and hospital management to establish, share and oversee a high standard of surgical nursing workflows at the OT.
  2. Consult and work with the international surgeon on best practices in all OT procedures and identify the technical and procedural weaknesses in current surgical nursing care and initiate suitable capacity building activities.
  3. Monitor nursing care quality and hygiene practices in the OT and post-operative ward.
  4. Provide hands-on clinical instruction to nurses in surgery and participate in difficult procedures.
  5. Mentor and offer classroom lectures to nurses and relevant hospital management as need arises.
  6. Support the update of the medical commodities officer and hospital director on drugs / medical supplies to ensure that medical orders are timely, upkeep is established and surgical procurement and maintenance activities are effectively shared amongst staff.
  7. Contributes to the international surgeon’s weekly report of activities and progress and end-of-contract analysis report to both UNOPS and the Director of Health in the Lakes State.

****Daily reporting to:****Hospital Director

****Coordination and communication of activities:**** All surgical staff.

Project length: 2-3 months, starting ASAP.

Remuneration: Tax free 6,500 USD / mo. Return flight and visa provided.
