JOB SUMMARY & PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Project Coordinator, Adaptation Learning Programme The position holder will work closely with the communities targeted by the ALP project and work as a member of the ALP Embu team; participating in all ALP key events. The incumbent will support planning by communities and their model community adaptation approaches as per their adaptation plans in line with the objectives and approaches of ALP. The Livelihoods Field officer will support ALP target groups develop sustainable livelihoods through promotion of climate resilient livelihood strategies and diversification as adaptation options.
Tasks and responsibilities
R 1: Facilitate participatory CBA analysis and planning processes for the ALP communities and the project stakeholders (30%)
Tasks
- Facilitate the identification and prioritization of household/individual CBA strategies by community groups.
- Contribute to institutional mapping exercise to identify local actors and organisations in adaptation
- Participate in facilitation of regular planning and coordination meetings among partners working at the community level
- Develop ALP target community capacity development plans on livelihood diversification to enhance adaptive capacity
- Participate in capacity assessment and capacity development planning for the project stakeholders
R 2: Capacity building and support to ALP target communities on implementation of CBA plans and strategies with focus on livelihood actions (40%)
Tasks
- Capacity development of ALP target community groups on business development skills
- Capacity building of the ALP communities on natural resources management with emphasis on rehabilitation of degraded productive land for sustainable livelihoods
- Participate in PSPs and dissemination of advisories to the ALP target communities
- Identify support needed by the ALP target groups to implement CBA strategies
- Support ALP target groups by creating linkages with the relevant service providers
- Providing on-going support and training for ALP community groups engaged in new and improved Livelihoods activities
- Participate in conducting Training Needs Assessments for ALP community groups in order to identify areas of training in livelihood activities**R3: Build the capacity of Partners (Civil Society Organizations and Local government) on community based adaptation (CBA) (10%)**
Tasks
- Learning on community based adaptation (CBA) framework and implementation
- Participate in capacity building of community level actors in adaptation on community based adaptation (CBA)
R4:Monitoring, evaluation and reporting of processes and results at household/individual level (20%)
Tasks
- Take part in monitoring of processes and results of project implementation at the community level
- Take part in data collection and documentation of project progress and results at the community level
- Facilitate reflection and learning exercises among partners at the community level to identify key lessons learned
- Ensure the timely submission of technical and activities reports to Project coordinator for onward submission to ALP manager
- Participate in the project documentation at the community level
- Participate in ALP review, planning and reflection meetings
R5: Management of Project Resources
- Facilitate procurement planning of assets and inputs to ensure adequate and timely provision to participating ALP target communities
- Undertake proper maintenance and use assigned resources
- CONTACTS/KEY RELATIONSHIPS (internal & external):
- ALP Project Manager, ALP Project Officers, Livelihoods sector staff, ALP PCT
- ALP project partner organizations, Government and local authorities for the target areas
- Other Local and International NGO staff
- Target communities/beneficiaries
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The position is based in Embu with 70% field travel across the county.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education:
Livelihoods Field Officer will have a minimum qualification of a university degree, in a relevant discipline such as rural development, community development or agriculture and livelihoods. The candidate must have practical experience in community facilitation and working with diverse teams.
2. Experience:
- At least three years of relevant working experience, including a minimum of two years working on community facilitation and capacity building
- Strong experience and knowledge of sustainable livelihoods approaches
- Strong practical experience in participatory analysis and planning
- At least one year experience in working with community groups engaged in business related activities
- Positive experiences working with local partners and relationship-building
- Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to gender and diversity
3. Competencies:
- People Skills: Ability to work both independently and as a team player who demonstrates leadership. Demonstrated ability to listen to and support programme staff and partners, and to work with communities in a sensitive and participatory manner.
- Communication Skills: Well developed written and oral communication skills in English. Able to communicate clearly and sensitively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Computer Skills: Basic computing skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; and, advanced internet searching skills.
- Integrity: Works with trustworthiness and integrity
- Resilience/Adaptability and flexibility: Ability to operate effectively under difficult circumstances. Willing to be in the field up to 70% of the time Experience and knowledge of working in ASAL areas in Kenya is an added advantage
