  1. The organization

Plan International works in 50 developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Americas to promote child rights and lift millions of children out of poverty. Plan International is independent, with no religious, political or governmental affiliations. Plan has worked in Kenya since 1982, helping poor children to access their rights to health, education, sanitation and protection. Today, more than 800,000 people in community-based organizations and children’s clubs, as well as farmers, youth and women’s groups benefit from our work. We focus on addressing causes of poverty and on managing different cultural practices that hinder the growth and development of children, especially girls. Plan strives to reduce poverty, raise children’s voices, support orphans and vulnerable children, and attend to those with special needs, such as the disabled.

Plan's vision is a world in which all children realize their full potential in societies that respect people's rights and dignity. Plan aims to achieve lasting improvements in the quality of life of deprived children in developing countries, through a process that unites people across cultures and adds meaning and value to their lives, by: enabling deprived children, their families and their communities to meet their basic needs and to increase their ability to participate in and benefit from their societies, building relationships to increase understanding and unity among peoples of different cultures and countries, promoting the rights and interests of the world's children.

****Background****

The Adolescent Girls Initiative Program (AGI-K), funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), provides a unique and exciting opportunity to reach at least 6000 adolescent girls ages 11-14 in two marginalized geographies in Kenya – Northern arid lands and Kibera urban slums in Nairobi. A range of interventions in the health, prevention of violence, wealth creation, and education sectors will be evaluated through a randomized controlled trial including the costing of each packages implementation to provide evidence on the most cost effective combinations which have the greatest impact.

In order to address the violence prevention intervention, the Community Conversations model will be used. Community Conversations is a socially transformative approach that stirs communities to address the underlying causes of underdevelopment and vulnerability, be they: structural and policy, power relations, gender issues, marginalization and social and cultural conventions.
